Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey
Age: 40
Date of birth: March 27, 1970
Born: New York, United States
Genres: R&B, Pop

Mariah Carey is a global phenomenon. Since her first public appearance in 1990 with her self-titled debut album and hit single Vision of Love, Mariah has gone on to collect a total of 18 #1 singles in the US, making her the solo artist with the most #1's in the history of the country. The sensational hits she released throughout the 20 years of her music career have set tons of records, making her the first female artist to have a song debut at #1, the only artist with three #1 debuts, the only artist with a #1 song each year from 1990 to 2000 and the most successful artist of the decade (1990 to 2000). Awards and records are just some of the many things Mariah has achieved. She has established a close connection with her fans, and her music is medium of that communication. Me and Mariah

Favourite song
It will always be difficult for me to answer this question. For a very long time, my favourite song by Mariah was Through The Rain from the Charmbracelet album, but after being exposed to her decades-long music catalogue, I am unable to choose one favourite Mariah Carey song. I've did a list of my favourite 25, but if I were to distill them down to the top five, it would definitely include Through The Rain, We Belong Together, Fantasy, Honey and probably Loverboy.

Favourite album
The Emancipation of Mimi is not only my favourite Mariah Carey album, but also, my favourite album of all-time. This includes the Ultra Platinum Edition, which features #1 hit Don't Forget About Us.

First song I heard
Definitely When You Believe, the duet with Whitney Houston from the Prince of Egypt soundtrack back in 1998. At that time, I pronounced her name as Mah-ria Carey. Very ashamed.

How I became a fan
I was not part of the Mimi era, but I did catch the E=MC2 period when Touch My Body exploded on to the charts. I later bought the Singapore edition of E=MC2, and by the end of the 2008, I have probably 15-20 Mariah songs in my computer. With 2009, I started listening to Through The Rain because of a MADtv parody, and it took off since. I discovered a lot about her throughout the months and then, tada, Mariah Carey is now my music inspiration.

Favourite Mariah belt
I believe Lead The Way (from Glitter) is definitely the belt with the most raw emotion ever in a song that I've heard in my life. Other favourite belts include those in Through The Rain (from Charmbracelet), We Belong Together, Fly Like A Bird and Don't Forget About Us, (all from The Emancipation of Mimi).

Favourite Mariah whistle
Easy. Fly Like A Bird (from The Emancipation of Mimi). Puts me in a drug-like state where I'm heaven whenver I hear that whistle from Fly Like A Bird. Others include Don't Forget About Us (also from Mimi) and obviously, Emotions (from Emotions).

Mariah looked best in the year
1997? I think the Honey moments were great. 2008 as well, cause of her figure in Touch My Body, Bye Bye and I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time.

Singles that shouldn't have gone to #1
My All is nice, but if I could choose between it and another song, I wouldn't want My All to be #1. (In reality, the song went to #1 for only one week. Alright. Understandable.)

Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera
Age: 29
Date of birth: December 18, 1980
Born: Pennsylvania, United States
Genres: Pop, R&B, Dance, Teen, Hip Hop, Jazz, Soul, Electronic

Christina Aguilera is more than just an iconic recording artist who began in the late 1990s. She is an artistic chameleon. First dubbed as the rival to fellow rising pop star Britney Spears back in 1999, Christina outperformed Britney when her debut single spent 5 times more weeks than Britney's at the #1 spot of the Billboard Hot 100, and her subsequent successes led Christina to taking home the coveted Best New Artist award given out in early 2000. Me and Christina

Favourite song
Simple. Dirrty featuring Redman, the lead single from the second album, Stripped. It didn't fare well in the US, but it was a Top 10 hit in more than 10 countries and topped the UK and Ireland charts. Dirrty was my most-listened song of 2009 even though it was released seven years before that.

Favourite album
Very very very hard to answer this, so if based on the number of favourite songs per album, it would be Back to Basics or Stripped. However, I do skip some Stripped songs. However, the songs from Stripped have more impact on me. So... which one? Hopefully her next album, Bionic, while be even better, so I don't have to be stuck in this dilemma.

First song I heard
Needless to say, Genie in a Bottle, thanks to my parents buying a music video compilation of the then pop stars many many years ago. I kept watching those music videos, and Genie in a Bottle was one of them.

How I became a fan
I only remember it was 2009 when I saw myself as a Christina Aguilera fan, but as for the process, I think it started with me hooked on to Dirrty and then proceeding to buy the entire Stripped album, followed by the rest, and then, voila.

Favourite Christina belt
Christina's belts are louder and more aggressive than Mariah's for sure! Let's see, I think it would be the bridge of Beautiful, when she hits a note I've never heard in my life. Hahahah! Others include Fighter, The Voice Within, Ain't No Other Man, Lady Marmalade, Car Wash, her live performance of It's A Man's Man's Man's World, and arguably Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You).

Christina looked best in the year
1999 and 2000. I think she looks gorgeous in the music video for What A Girl Wants.

Me and Rihanna

Favourite song
SOS, my all-time favourite song including other artists, largely attributed by the synth hook samples from Soft Cell's Tainted Love, which I heard long before even listening to SOS.

Favourite album
Good Girl Gone Bad. The first two albums were a bore (even though they contained Pon De Replay and SOS respectively). The fourth album was a little too over-done. Hence, the third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, is the best.

First song I heard
Unfaithful being played over the speakers in a talent show at a shopping mall for some teenage girl to cover.

How I became a fan
I watched Bring It On because it was playing on TV. I then watched the third movie in the Bring It On series, which featured SOS. Prior to this, I've already heard SOS but I didn't like it then. This time, I went to buy the whole album just for that song, and if I'm not wrong, Good Girl Gone Bad dropped a few weeks later, with Umbrella cementing me as a Rihanna fan.

Favourite Rihanna vocal performance
Photographs in the Rated R album. I think she sounded really good in Hate That I Love You as well.

Rihanna looked best in the year
2006. Miss the long hair in her SOS era. Her hair gets worse with each other. It was okay in 2007, then became even shorter in 2008, and by 2009, she had a cockatoo for a hairstyle.

Born: Colorado, United States
Genres: Alternative, Electronic

Sean Foreman and Nate Mote form an electronic duo by the name, 3OH!3 (pronounced three-oh-three). After the release of their first single, Don't Trust Me, which was a massive hit soaring into the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, 3OH!3 has been collaborating with several other artists to continue making music, including Katy Perry, Neon Hitch and Ke$ha. They have recently contributed to the soundtrack for the blockbuster film, Alice in Wonderland.

Quick facts
* 2 Top 10 singles
* 2 Platinum singles
* 4 Billboard Hot 100 entries
Me and 3OH!3

Favourite song
Starstrukk featuring Katy Perry is very energetic. The original version without Katy Perry is surprisingly lousy though.

First song I heard
Same, Starstrukk.

How I became a fan
I don't see 3OH!3 along the ranks of Mariah, Christina, Rihanna and even Trey Songz, but I think they have very very awesome songs, namely Starstrukk, Don't Trust Me, Follow Me Down and Blah Blah Blah. That's the only reason why they are in the list of selected artists for this site.

Favourite 3OH!3 vocal performance
Don't Trust Me I guess, cause they turn into falsetto for the chorus. Not easy to hold up a falsetto. At the same time, they do sound very annoying in Follow Me Down and Blah Blah Blah, as much as the songs are nice to listen to. That's why, annoying in a strangely good way.

Ke$ha was first known for the contributing vocals to the #1 hit single, Right Round, by Flo Rida, but chose not to appear in the single's music video, intending to find success on her own two feet. A songwriter (and frequent scuba-diver), Ke$ha wrote TiK ToK, which would become the #1 hit in the US for the first nine weeks of 2010, making her the female artist with the longest run for a #1 debut single in many many years. Ke$ha has released her debut album, entitled Animal, and her second single, Blah Blah Blah featuring 3OH!3, is enjoying success as Ke$ha's second Top 10 single.

Me and Ke$ha

Favourite song
TiK ToK on the clock, but the party won't stop, no. Also her most successful single so far.

First song I heard
Right Round is counted, right, even though she wasn't officially credited as performing the song.

How I became a fan
One day, I decided to listen to the whole Animal album. It was good, so I bought the physical copy and continued listening. From then, I think Ke$ha's songs are nice, even though she sucks performing live, and really has an attitude problem, because she can't behave herself.

Favourite Ke$ha vocal performance
It's weird to answer this question knowing at the back of my head that 90% of her songs are Auto-tuned... I think Stephen is simple and sweet.

Quick facts

Me and Lady Gaga

Favourite song
Bad Romance, I believe, although there are many other catchy Lady Gaga tracks from across her two albums.

Favourite album
The Fame Monster definitely had more impact with its eight tracks compared to the long-player The Fame. Besides, I've always though The Fame was a little too glossy.

First song I heard
Just Dance, which features a "rap" by Colby O'Donis.

How I became a fan
I don't see myself as a Lady Gaga fan, actually, because I don't like her snobbish interview personality. She's nice in certain interviews, and a diva know-it-all with an offensive attitude in many others. Plus, her music is great, but that doesn't mean I like the artist herself. Also, I don't like the fact that people think she has 6 #1 singles when in truth, she has 6 #1 singles on the Pop charts, but not on the overall charts, which is obviously bigger. Lady Gaga is overrated sometimes. In fact, I overestimated her many times. I thought Bad Romance would hit #1, although it was blocked by TiK ToK in the end. I thought Telephone would soar to the top spot after its music video release, but it only climbed 2 spots one week later, then into #3 the following week, and subsequently falling to #5.

Favourite Lady Gaga vocal performance
Speechless and Brown Eyes are not drowned in excessive electronic music, so it's great.

About

Name: Ignatius
Age: 16
Location: Singapore

Why I started this site: I used to only write in a personal blog, ignatiussaidwhat.blogspot.com, which consists of two types of writings: personal, narrative daily events flooded with photographs of my friends and me, and entertainment posts covering my favourite music, movies and other areas in entertainment and media.

I realised that my entertainment posts are not appropriate for the gist of my personal blog, and besides, the exclusive friends inside my personal blog just scan through my articles anyway. That's why, I chose to start publishing my entertainment posts publicly, since after all, there's no privacy compromise with everyone reading them.

My favourite artists
Also the most common topics in this site, my favourite artists are definitely, in decreasing interest, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Rihanna. I frequently listen to Trey Songz, 3OH!3, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga and most recently, Green Day, as well.

My favourite songs
I have 1400+ songs in my iPod and iTunes, so it's actually pretty difficult to decide. However, the biggest few in recent years:
Beautiful - Christina Aguilera
Dirrty - Christina Aguilera featuring Redman
Fantasy - Mariah Carey
Honey - Mariah Carey
Shooting Star - Boyzone
SOS - Rihanna
Through The Rain - Mariah Carey
My favourite albums
Of the 430+ albums (most of which only feature one or two songs each), the best ones I can listen to from start to finish are:
The Emancipation of Mimi - Mariah Carey
American Idiot - Green Day

Age: 25
Date of birth: November 28, 1984
Born: Virginia, United States
Genres: R&B

Born Tremaine Aldon Neverson, Trey Songz was first heard around the world with his debut album, I Gotta Make It, which was released on 2005. He has released subsequent albums every two years, the second being Trey Day, with the smash hit Can't Help But Wait, which was featured in the soundtrack for the Step Up 2 the Streets movie. His latest album, Ready, released only recently on 2009, became a Grammy-award nominee for the Best Contemporary R&B Album. It also cemented his identity in the music industry with the #1 R&B single, I Invented Sex, and gave him his first Top 10 single on the Billboard Hot 100: Say Aah.

Quick facts
* 8 Top 10 R&B singles
* 3 Top 10 R&B/Hip Hop albums
* 2 Grammy award nominations
Me and Trey Songz

Favourite song
I Need A Girl, the lead single from Ready, even though the guitar intro in the beginning of the sound is very irritating. Can't Help But Wait is my second favourite Trey Songz song, though I think I listen to this one more than I do listen to I Need A Girl.

Favourite album
Ready, very obviously. It is the only Trey Songz album I own in physical copy (since it is probably the only Trey Songz album that can be found physically in Singapore).

First song I heard
Can't Help But Wait, although I didn't know who performed that song at the time.

How I became a fan
I was looking through Billboard.com's Hot 100 songs, and one of them was entitled LOL :-). I found the title unusually appealing (of course it is, because of that smiley face), so I looked up Trey Songz on Wikipedia and Youtube. LOL :-) was okay, but I Need A Girl and Can't Help But Wait were really nice.

Favourite Trey Songz vocal performance
Can't Help But Wait of course. His voice was also nice in many other songs, such as I Invented Sex and Yo Side of the Bed.

Trey Songz looked best in the year
2009. His hair was really funny-looking in the previous years.
