25 Favourite Mariah Carey Songs

As you all know, I have every studio album Mariah Carey ever has so far (all of her 12 albums ranging from 1990 - 2009), and if she were to release her upcoming remix album, Angels Advocate, I will also buy it as well, so that makes it 13 studio albums. Including the other songs she made (such as When You Believe with Whitney Houston, some remixes, some live performances and some charity singles, I have 190+ Mariah Carey tracks in my iPod.

Most of the time people would say the best Mariah Carey song is Hero. I think it would interest you to know that Hero in my list of the 25 favourite Mariah Carey songs. I don't know. Like the words of Alexandra Burke, "it just didn't do anything for me". I listen to it, but I don't feel connected to the song at all.

And, the below 25 songs are NOT entirely her successful hits. Some of them were not released as singles, and I think a couple of them did but failed to go anywhere. This means I do listen to her non-popular songs, and that's why I think I have the rights to write this article!

In alphabetical order (because if I were to rank them, I would NOT be able to decide, and they would most likely be very inaccurate):

"Make my wish come true. All I want for Christmas is you."

I first heard this song during my December holiday trip at the UK. It was playing over the radio, and I only knew it was a Christmas song about Mariah Carey. In the end, after the year ended and I went back to Singapore, I downloaded the song and kept listening to it, even though Christmas was already over! The song is about Mariah wanting nothing for Christmas except her crush.

This song is one of the best-selling holiday songs of all time, and is the 2nd best international song sold in Japan. It was the #1 US Billboard Holiday Song.

"No way you're ever gonna shake me. Oh darling, cause you'll always be my baby."

For a very long time, I knew the tune to the four words always be my baby, but I never knew the rest of the song. I started listening to it properly after downloading every Mariah Carey #1 song, and this song is actually a 1990s classic. It was later covered by David Cook on American Idol, and as much as I enjoyed his version, I think this original is still the best. The song is about a guy who wants the leave Mariah, but still, that guy will always be Mariah's baby.

#1 in the US for 2 weeks (it also spent 9 weeks at #2).

"Betcha gon' know how it feels when I get you back."

The first track to her latest, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, I liked this song from the first time I heard this. It's like the first chapter of a storybook, that's why (The Prologue) as a secondary title. The lyrics tell that Mariah saw her boyfriend sleeping with another girl and leaving before they realise she saw them. You can literally imagine a music video just by listening to the words.

This song was not released as a single, but because of strong digital sales, it debuted at #101, even without any promotion.

"Now the hardest thing to do is say bye bye."

Listening to this song always reminds me of 2008. I used to dislike it, thinking it was some Mariah Carey sentimental song (at that time I was't an MC fan la). Now of course I don't. The song's about the death of someone close to you, and how you will "never say bye".

This song was a Top 20 hit in the US.

"They can try but they can't take that away from me."

"That" refers to Mariah's spirit, will and strength. The song's very inspiring. It's about people who "try to bring me down", but Mariah "won't face the ground". She also belts, "the Lord will guide me where I need to go". I used to find it silly that there's a (Mariah's Theme) attached to the back of the title. Now I think it looks cool if not too long.

This song went to #4 in Canada.

"I'm just speaking from experience. Nothing can compare to your first true love.
So I hope this will remind you. When it's for real, it's forever, so don't forget about us."

Mariah has broken up with her boyfriend, and he now has another girlfriend, but "she'll never be MC" and their love was stronger, so she tells her boyfriend, don't forget about us. I really think this song is very cool. The beats are nice. The song progression is wonderful.

This song was nominated for two Grammys. It also was a #1 hit in the US.

"So deep in my daydream, but it's just a sweet, sweet fantasy baby. Fantasy."

I love this song like siao. It samples Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club, but you probably don't know what's that all about. It's about her fantasizing about her crush. This song also has one of the corniest yet most interesting bridges - "I'm in heaven with my boyfriend, my laughing boyfriend." Don't even know what that means! Still, if you tell me to narrow down to Top 10 Best Mariah Carey Songs, this song will definitely be in. Used to dislike it though. :}

#1 hit for 8 weeks in the US. Amazing right. That's 2 months. Oh ya, the first song ever by a female artist to debut at #1. Fantasy made history man!

"Fly like a bird, take to the sky. I need You now, Lord. Carry me high!"

First time I heard this song was during a Mariah Carey medley at the Grammys. Didn't like it then, but now, if you ever tell me to sing a song in church, I will choose to sing this. It's very very very incredible. This song is about Mariah singing to God to lift her spiritually from troubles in the world.

Along with the endless whistles at the end of the song, Mariah received a standing ovation for performing this song at the Grammys. She was the only one to receiving a standing ovation that night.

"Heartbreaker, you got the best of me but I just keep on coming back incessantly."

This song is about how she cannot break away from her evil boyfriend and asks why he must keep treating her like this. In the mean time, she "cannot resist". It samples Name of the Game by Stacy Lattisaw.

The music video for this song is the 7th most expensive music video IN THE WORLD, at $2.5 million. It's the one where she does kung fu against her brunette alter ego. Oh ya, it also was a #1 hit in the US. =D

"Oh baby I got a dependency. Always strung out for another taste of your honey."

This is probably my favourite R&B song ever. So probably one of my Top 5 favourite Mariah Carey songs. Ironically, I hated this song for a long time. But I think the beats and the hook are ingenious samples. It's a song about how she loves her boyfriend la. It's very fun to listen to. The music video is the one where she gets captured in a mansion and escapes by jumping off into the swimming pool and then rides the water into the sea.

A 3-week #1 hit for Mariah in the US, it was nominated for Best R&B Song at the Grammys.

"How I wish you only knew what I feel inside for you.
Probably haven't got a clue, but I wish you knew how I love you baby."

Very gospel, quiet-storm, I like. Just read the above quote and you know what the song is about liao. I think millions of people should listen to this song cause they can relate to it very well. This song is made to sound like a live performance because halfway through the song, she "speaks to her audience".

This song was not released as a single. It should have. In the mean time, she performed it in her Adventures of Mimi tour.

"Long as I know you got me, I'll be lovin' u long time."

I was in the UK, and I was at a beach with seagulls and sea fowl everywhere, and it was really cold, and the setting was orange thanks to the sun, and you could really feel the harbour-beach atmosphere, and what did I do? Take out my iPod and play this song. I loved that moment. The song and the setting blended very well. Very very well. Very very very well. This song is about Mariah singing that so as long as she and her man love each other, no one can stop them and nothing else matters.

This song charted at #58 on the Billboard Hot 100. Sad. It was damn nice la.

"And if we move closer, then love will take over and lead the way."

If it is one song that Rita should choose from the Mariah Carey catalogue for her sister to play at her wedding, it is this song. It definitely is one of MC's best vocal performances, and there is so much raw emotion after the second chorus, it's a reasonable tearjearker. It's about two people falling in love and looking back.

Thanks to the destruction of Glitter, this song was underrated.

"Loverboy, come on and love me. Gimme more, touch me
and touch me. I enjoy the way you rock me all night long."

A very bimbotic, retarded, crazy, nonsensical song about Mariah who's just singing about her new guy. When I heard it, I was like, it has a stupid tune, and yet I went to put it into my iPod and just constantly replay it. I like it a lot. Definitely most-listened song of 2010 so far.

This song went to #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was the #1 R&B Song. =D

"Maybe you could be mine again. Maybe we can make that dream for real like way back then."

The first line is "I remember when you used to be mine". It's very quiet-storm, has insanely awesome music, and very suitable for those longing to be with their exes.

This song was not released as a single. Sad.

"Why you so obsessed with me? Boy I wana know. Lying that you're sexing
me when everybody knows it's clear that you're upset with me."

This song is very obviously "why you so obsessed with me?" Need I say more? Actually this track is incomparable to her previous great hits, but because I listened to this song so many times, it's one of my favourites.

This song was #7 in the US. Yeah, Top 10. Unfortunately, every other song she released after this one never made it to even Top 40. D:

"Did you really care? Care enough for me?"

Another track from disastrous Glitter, this song is very nice actually, written for the movie whether Mariah sings about whether her mom really did care about her, because in the movie, she was separated from her mom at a very young age.

I don't think this song charted anywhere. Glitter what.

"Someday, one you gave away will be the only one you're wishing for."

I think the song concept quite similar to Don't Forget About Us and Always Be My Baby, cause it's after a breakup. After all, first line is "you were so blind to let me go." It's quite a comforting song to those that have just broken up. Hahahahaha.

The third Mariah Carey #1 song in her discography.

"You keep saying 'stay the night. Just let me rock you to the morning light.
It's cold outside and much to late to drive'."

Kanye West wrote this song! It's full of belts. It's about Mariah at her boyfriend's house, and somemore it's very late and cold, so her boyfriend tell her, just say overnight la. There's like a story in this song.

This song was not released as a single.

"Thank God I found you. I was lost without you."

It's a positive love song of course. Nice melody. Very nice male vocals to join Mariah. Like the bridge a lot. Think quite unfair that 98 Degrees were just background vocals for the track.

This song was Mariah's last #1 hit before We Belong Together went to the top 5 years later.

"There's got to be a way to connect this world today."

A very inspiring, encouraging song that is NOT about love. It's about reminding people about compassion for other less fortunate people. It should have been a charity single. It's not like Hero or Just Stand Up!. It's very... unique, and it just makes you smile to listen to this song.

This song was #54 in the UK. It was not released in the US as a single. Don't know why.

"I can make it through the rain. I can stand up once again on my
own and I know that I'm strong enough to mend."

Listening to this song just reminds me of 2009 when I listened to it billions of times. This is the song that made me first discover a whole new side of Mariah that I didn't know, and the song that made me fall in love with her. It's very obvious what the song is about.

#81 in the US. Yep, it did not perform up to expectations, because it was a follow-up to the Glitter era. Mariah had dark times then. Sad.

"Touch my body, put me on the floor. Wrestle me around, play with me some more."

You know, I never caught the Emancipation of Mimi era cause back then I was Primary 5 and 6. But back in 2008, when I was Secondary 2, I caught the E=MC2 era, and this lead single from the album was part of my pre-idolization for Mariah Carey! It's just a very fun song, that's all.

This song broke Elvis Presley's record of seventeen #1s, because it was Mariah's 18th #1 hit. =D

"Who's gonna take your place? There ain't nobody better. Oh baby baby, we belong together."

I think I first heard this song back in 2005, but I never liked it. Never never never. Then came 2008 when I listened to Touch My Body and then had every song from E=MC2, and then I put this song into my computer as well because it was known to be a hit. And now, I know the lyrics so well, I definitely know this song better than I know the Periodic Table. Sorry but it's true, hahahahah! Must I explain this song meaning? No need right.

14 weeks at #1. Song of the Decade (2000 - 2009) in the US. If every #1 hit is a Greek God, then this song is Zeus.

"There can be miracles when you believe. Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill."

I am very very ultra certain this song is the VERY FIRST Mariah Carey song I heard. Prior to this song, I have no idea who Mariah Carey was. And I knew it song when I was in Lower Primary I think. Probably 1999 - 2003, I knew this song. Comes from the movie, The Prince of Egypt. Oh ya, before I idolized Mariah, I liked to sing to Whitney Houston's lines. Now, I only sing to Mariah's lines. Hahahahah!

#15 in the US, this song won an Academy award.

Okay, that's all. I bet none of you read anything. Never mind. Just wanted to write this out.
